He was part of the Canaanite "Divine Assembly", who were basically the pantheon of gods the ancient canaanites prayed to. Baal, the fertility god was in this divine assembly as well. The top god of this assembly was named El. I'm not kidding you, go look it up. You'll also find he had a female consort, named Asherah.
