SOME MORE: Nabokov's -Lectures on Literature-, edited by Fredson Bowers, makes a wonderful companion to this piece.
My first encounter with this film was during a visit to Cornell. We spent a day driving around Ithaca checking out Vladimir & Vera's former houses. (They never purchased property in Ithaca, but instead stayed at various houses of tenured faculty on sabbatical.)
During our time living "Out West," we visited Portal, Arizona, where V & V used to winter and V used to conduct his work as a lepidopterist.

Although V.V. differs from V&V, they nevertheless share a sensibility in the passage from V's masterpiece, -The Gift-:
In this work, V echoes something that Vitanza says by way way of Giorgio Agamben. That is, Vladmir/Vitanza discuss a sensibility that "would not be a form of a book, which by its finiteness is opposed to the circular nature of everything, but [instead will have been regarded as] a continuously curving, and thus infinite sentence" that would appear on a "flat, rectangular paper" (Dar 231).
This "flat, rectangular paper"--a piece of paper that we continue to experience--shows up in a variety of other contexts that will be explored in subsequent YouTube postings.
For now, adventurous readers/th.inkers of V&V will want to try out VV's impossible-cum-compossible DAR.t-like stylistics.

I seriously suggest you go into literary criticism. A book titled " Nabokov was an Asshole; Cervantes Rules" would be much more interesting than Nabokov's essays on European classics, Russian literature and some spick and his fat fuck friend.

Previous commentators are right, Plummer is pretty close to VN as I've heard him. He could speak with, to quote on interviewer, 'a dramatic Cambridge accent' but this would flag after a while. He put it beautifully himself: "I think like a genius, I write like a distinguished author, and I speak like a child".

Compare the actor's performance to Nabokov's real voice:

Plummer sounds pretty damn close to the original thing, in my opinion. No doubt Nabokov would protest that Plummer's long 'Os' are ochre or some other terrestrial color, while his 'Os' are a weak solution of blue.

Those Cornell students were damn lucky! It's wonderful to get a sense of VN's remarkable lecturing skills... However, he never delivered lectures extemporaneously; he always read from meticulously prepared notes...But I suppose that'd be pretty boring on film!
