Crianças com Harlequin precisam ser dirigidas ao tratamento neonatal intensivo imediatamente. Devido à falta de elasticidade da pele, visto que onde deveria haver a pele normal há massivas escamas que lembram a forma de diamantes, a principal função dela, que seria a de proteger, é defasada. Por isso, a partir do momento em que a pele racha onde deveria esticar, é de fácil acontecimento a contração de infecções letais no portador do distúrbio a partir da penetração de bactérias e outros agentes contaminantes através das fissuras. Neurofibromatose O termo neurofibromatose se refere a duas desordens genéticas distintas, a neurofibromatose tipo 1 e a neurofibromatose tipo 2. A neurofibromatose tipo 1 é também conhecida como Neurofibromatose de Von Recklinghausen ou Neurofibromatose Periférica. A neurofibromatose tipo 2 é também conhecida como Neurofibromatose do Neurinoma do Acustico Bilateral ou Neurofibromatose Central. Ambas provocam a formação de tumores ao redor dos nervos. A neurofibromatose é uma desordem genética que apresenta duas características distintas. A neurofibromatose tipo 1 é causada por uma mutação genética no cromossomo 17 e a neurofibromatose tipo 2 é causada por uma mutação genética presente no cromossomo 22. Síndrome de Proteus A síndrome de Proteus é uma doença congênita que causa crescimento exagerado e patológico da pele com tumores subcutaneos, desenvolvimento atípico com macrodactília e hemihipertrofia. É uma doença extremamente rara: se descreveram cerca de 100 casos em todo mundo. Esta doença teria permanecido desconhecida, se não fosse o caso de Joseph Merrick, O homem elefante, foi um caso particularmente grave desta síndrome, além da neurofibromatose que também acredita-se que tinha.
