I think you're right, it does seem as if the Muqabla is between the dancers and Shammi.

Yea, neither do I. I also train in Kathak but have never heard of it "borrowing" anything from Belly Dance.

Great question. I don't get the impression that there is commonality in the elements of Kathak and belly dance. I say it is a great question because interpretations of culture including dance inspire one another. Vyjantimala was a terrific interpreter of dance. Another new promising Interpreter is Manjari Chaturvedi with her contribution to Sufi Kathak. She can be viewed on webindia123.

I thought the mukabla was between the girls (who sang together) vs Shammi. Does anyone know who won it in the movie? I liked Shammi best because he was backed by the golden voice of Mohammed Rafi.

What specific elements does Kathak borrow from belly dance?

I agree, her Kathak performance wasn't very Kathak-like. More like Bollywood's version of Kathak. In real Kathak you don't spin like that or dance on your toes the way she is. I am a HUGE fan of Vyjyanthimala, she is an inspiring dancer.

i agree, Bharatanatyam is definately her strongest dance, her Kathak seemed a bit all over the place. It was Kathak danced in a Bharatanatyam style. Not floatiness

Yes, I do know she was one of the greatest dancers of her time, but that doesn't mean she can't have give a bad performance in something. Her performance in Kathak just didn't match up the rest. Her movements were far too simple, and she just moved in an awkward kind of way. I know Kathak very well as I have been performing ever since I can remember.
